This beautiful fountain known as “the Tortoise” is a magical creation (1581) by Giacomo della Porta The fountain had to be builds in the nearby ghetto in Piazza Giudia but on the intervention of the Mattei family it was built here in.

The fountain originally rested on a base consisting of a few steps, according to Della Porta's traditional scheme.
The unusual composition was considerably different from the other fountains built so far, and the people were very impressed by the final result, also because of the variety of colours: a deep grey upper basin (grey African marble), a white baluster with grey veining, small lower basins speckled in grey, red and white (portasanta marble), and the bronze statues.
In origine la fontana poggiava su una base formata da pochi gradini, secondo il modello tradizionale del Della Porta.
L'insolita composizione dei gruppi bronzei era molto diversa da quella delle altre fontane costruite fino ad allora, e la gente rimase davvero colpita dal risultato finale, anche per via della varietà di colori: il catino sommitale grigio scuro (bigio africano), il balaustro bianco venato di grigio, i piccoli catini in basso screziati di grigio, rosso e bianco, e le statue color bronzo.
Almost one century later (1659), pope Alexander VII had the fountain restored, and on this occasion he decided to add something above the four figures; their fingers did not reach the edge of the top basin (probably this was due to the few changes that had been agreed during the making of the fountain). Four bronze tortoises were created for this purpose, and placed on the basin so to fill the gap. Obviously, the fountain's name steadily turned into "of the Tortoises".
Quasi un secolo dopo (1659), papa Alessandro VII fece restaurare la fontana, e in questa occasione decise di apportare un'aggiunta alle quattro figure; le loro dita non raggiungevano il bordo del catino superiore (forse in conseguenza delle anzidette modifiche, apportate a costruzione già avviata). Furono realizzate all'uopo quattro tartarughe di bronzo, e posizionate in modo da riempire gli spazi vuoti. Com'era prevedibile, il nome della fontana mutò stabilmente in "delle Tartarughe".
