S.Benedetto in Priscinula

In the heart of Trastevere, the most "Roman" neighbourhood of the Eternal City, can be found the church of San Benedetto in Piscinula. With more than a thousand years of history, it constitutes a remarkable treasure of the medieval art of Rome.

It was at this building, around the year 480, that the venerable Abbot came to study and resided during his stay in Rome

Fountain of the weeping – Fontana del pianto

Also known as the fountain of piazza Giudia (or Giudea) as it came from the square in the old ghetto demolished in 1888, this fountain carved by Pietro Gucci (1591) is considered to be one of the better creations of the architect Giacomo della Porta. A white marble, elongated basin rests on a base of two steps. In the centre a baluster supports a circular basin with a central jet from which water falls into the lower basin from four masks inspired by the Gorgons, with snakes in their hair, who spout water throught wide open mouths.
E' considerata una delle più felici ideazioni dell'architetto Giacomo della Porta questa fontana, detta anche di piazza Giudia (o Giudea) perché proveniente dalla piazza dell'antico ghetto, demolito nel 1888. Lo scalpellino fu Pietro Gucci (1591). Sopra un basamento costituito da due gradini trova posto una vasca in marmo bianco di forma allungata, a pianta mistilinea, al centro della quale un balaustro sorregge un catino circolare con zampillo centrale, dal quale l'acqua viene versata nella vasca sottostante attraverso quattro maschere, ispirate alle Gorgoni, dunque con serpenti tra i capelli, gettano acqua dalle bocche spalancate.

A small fountain - Una piccola fontana

The 'Facchino' (the porter) is a small fountain representing a male figure, whose face is very badly preserved, pouring water from a cask; the robe worn by the statue is the typical costume of the porters guild, whence the figure's name.
Il "Facchino" è una piccola fontana che rappresenta una figura maschile, il cui viso è andato quasi del tutto perduto, nell'atto di versare acqua da una botte; l'abito indossato dalla figura è il costume tipico della corporazione dei facchini, da cui il nome del personaggio


It dates back to the second half of the 16th (1587), and according to a popular tradition it was inspired by a water-carrier (a man whose work was to draw water from public fountains and sell it, door to door, for a moderate price).
Risale alla seconda metà del XVI secolo(1587), e secondo una tradizione popolare fu ispirata dalla figura di un acquarolo, colui cioè che raccoglieva acqua dalle fontane pubbliche per rivenderla porta a porta, a modico prezzo

The Cestia Pyramid in Rome is a funerary monument dedicated to the member of the "College of the Septemviri" Caio Cestio Epulone, who probably died in 12 before Christ.
La Piramide Cestia a Roma è un monumento funerario dedicato al membro del Collegio dei Septemviri Caio Cestio Epulone, morto probabilmente nel 12 a.C.


Is approximately 37 metres high, and it is laying on a square base with a side equal to 30 metres; a slab on the oriental side remembers how the work has been realised in less than 330 days in respect to the testamentary dispositions that established in such period the maximum delay for the achievement of the funerary monument and to therefore access to the heredity.
E' alta approssimativamente 37 metri, e si poggia su una base quadrata di lato pari a 30 metri; una lastra sul lato orientale ricorda come l'opera sia stata realizzata in meno di 330 giorni in ossequio alle disposizioni testamentarie che stabilivano in tale periodo il termine massimo per completare il monumento funebre ed accedere così all'eredità.
